Cartney-Hunt House [See Website]=408 S. 7th St.
Columbus, MS 39701 1263502811 Welcome to the Cartney-Hunt House. This Federal-style house was built in 1828 only seven years after Columbus was incorporated in 1821. The builder of the house, Mr. James M. Cartney, acquired the tract of land that the house is located on April 10, 1824. Mr. Cartney conveyed the property to Henry W. Hunt sometime before June 20, 1836. --- Let's think back to the time when the house was built. Columbus was not much more than a village and most of the houses in town were log cabins. Columbus was easily accessible by steamboat via the Tombigbee River and by the U. S. Government's Military Road that stretched from Nashville to New Orleans through Columbus. The population did not increase rapidly, however, until the early 1830's when the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians ceded their land to the U. S. Government. Then, many families flocked from the East to buy this good prairie soil for about $2.00 an acre. --- The original house was two stories tall and two rooms deep, but only one room wide. The house was heated by a central triangular chimney with fireplaces in each room. The transomed doorframe survives from this early period, which reflects simple Federal detailing. --- This late Federal style is very unusual for this part of the country. It is one of the few in the area. It is the oldest brick house in North Mississippi. --- IIt was restored by a local attorney, Mr. Hunter Gholson, in 1983 to be used as a bed and breakfast which is now being run by the current owners, Marleen and Vagn Hansen. Dunleith Historic Inn [See Website]=84 Homochitto Street
Natchez, MS. 39120 1263654309 In a world that often moves too fast, it is good to know that some things never change - tradition, hospitality, charm and grace - elements that are not only remembered here at Dunleith, but embraced. Some have said it's the architecture and history at Dunleith that brings them back year after year for weekend getaways, corporate retreats or once-in-a-life-time wedding experiences. For others, it is the accommodations, the grounds, the service or the food found at the Castle Restaurant. Dupree traded his home in the town of Raymond (the Dupree-Ratliff House, circa 1859), the twenty three acres surrounding the house, and a merchantile store for 1,100 acres of land five miles west of Raymond. On the land was a three-room structure built in the 1850's, which Dr. Dupree developed into a two story plantation dwelling, known today as the Dupree House. The Cole House [See Website]=235 West Beacon St.
Philadelphia, MS. 39350 1263584473 The Cole House was built in approximate 1916 by Everette Sellers Cole, Sr. He and his brother, Wilbur built their homes beside each other, up the street from their business, Cole Brothers Wholesale Grocery. After his death, Mrs. Cole continued to live there until her death in the late 80's. The home sat vacant for approximately 10 years until sold and an antique and linen shop opened in it. After four years it was sold to Ronnie and Michelle Jones, who were instrumental in bringing the bed and breakfast to fruition with the Waltman's. The house has since been lovingly restored to what an early Victorian may have looked like. James & Linda Waltman (601)656-5433

The Lion and Harp at Oak Knoll [See Website]=4432 State Boulevard
Meridian, MS. 39307 1263583832 The house has an unusual history. It was built by Mr. Joseph Meyer, a prominent local businessman in 1890. Originally located at 619 30th Avenue and Harris Street in the city, the house had been boarded up and empty for nearly 30 years when Mr. and Mrs Joseph Yarbrough purchased it in the mid 1970s. The home was disassembled, relocated to the present site and reconstructed. Its now located on ten partially landscaped, but mostly wooded acres of Mississippi countryside in the northwest area of Meridian. The task was completed in 1975. In the mid 1980s, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Holland purchased the home for their catering business. They called it "Hamilton Hall," and used the house for hosting dinners and receptions. In 1996, the Bill Rein family purchased the B&B, renamed it "Oak Knoll" and made important upgrades. Janet McBrien, of English ancestry (Lion) from Derby in the United Kingdom and Thomas McBrien, a New Yorker of Irish ancestry (Harp) became the current B&B owners on September 1st, 2000. Janet brings a touch of England to this old southern home with her British accent, British recipes, and collection of fine British china. Landscaping is Tom's specialty, and as spring arrives, you will see a bit of Ireland appear in the gardens. Janet and Thomas McBrien (601)485-8235
