The farmhouse is nestled in a secluded valley beside the meandering, rippling stream named Tomahawk Run. It is surrounded by 280 acres of woods, hills and meadows where walking paths are maintained for your pleasure. As the seasons change, you can enjoy strolling the paths through spring flowering dogwood and redbud trees, or in the summer, through fields of wildflowers, or enjoy the awesome multicolored leaves in the autumn..
In the early 1740s, Israel Robinson and his wife, recent immigrants from Northern Ireland, ended their search for a new homesite in the newly opened wilderness that was western Virginia. It was an ideal site beside a spring with an abundant supply of cold, crystal clear water flowing into a rock basin shaped like a tomahawk. After building a log cabin and clearing many acres of land, Israel received a land grant of 400 acres from Lord Fairfax, the governor of Virginia. The spring soon became known as the Tomahawk Spring, and later, when a village came into being, it was called Tomahawk.
The Farmhouse, built during the American Civil War, now stands beside the spring house
(now on the National Register of Historic Places) and the foundation of the old log cabin. Its
extensive restoration and expansion was begun in October 1991 by Judy Erskine and Boyd
Rooney, direct descendants of Israel Robinson, and Judy's husband, Hugh. As much of the
original materials as possible were salvaged and used; however, modern conveniences such as
central heating and air conditioning, and bathrooms with running water have been added.
Outlet shopping and sightseeing at Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry, Charles Town, Shepherdstown, Antietam and Berkeley Springs, are among the many attractions that are only a short drive away. Golf, hunting, fishing and horseback riding are also close by.
The farmhouse contains 3 guest rooms, all with private baths. Two guest rooms have king-size
beds, sitting areas and private balconies and the third has a queen-size pencil post bed and an
adjoining sitting room for private use. A stone fireplace in the large gathering room contains a
roaring log fire on cold evenings. On the wraparound porch, rocking chairs and a Jacuzzi are
available to help you unwind from the rigors of the work-week. In the morning, a delicious and
bountiful three-course, candlelight breakfast is served in the dining room. Some of the original
furnishings share places of honor amid special items collected by Judy and Hugh during their
years spent in Britain and Japan.
The Carriage House contains two guest rooms and two bathrooms on the upper level and a complete kitchen/dining/living area on the lower level. One guest room has a king-size bed and the other a queen and single and both rooms open to a large covered balcony. The living area contains a fireplace, sofa bed, TV and VCR.
